Shaping a Sustainable Future: Redefining Drinking Straw Design

In our efforts to combat plastic pollution, my colleagues and I unveiled groundbreaking research conducted at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in partnership with bioplastic producer, Eastman, now published in ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering. Our work, “Strategies to Reduce the Environmental Lifetimes of Drinking Straws in the Coastal Ocean” with co-authors Yanchen Sun, Mounir Izallalen, Sharmistha Mazumder, Steven T. Perri, Brian Edwards, Jos de Wit, Christopher M. Reddy, Collin P. Ward, evaluated the lifetimes of several commerical bioplastic drinking straws and demonstrated that foaming can have an outsized positive impact on reducing environmental lifetimes.
